CHRISTMAS NEWSLETTER December 2020

Greetings members of the choir, subscribers and Friends of Bradford Chorale. We very much hope that you are safe, well and managing the current 'climate' with some degree of equanimity.

If you have been joining our Tuesday evening 'Zoom' rehearsals (and nearly three-quarters of our registered members have been attending regularly) you will now have experienced and enjoyed the choir's first 'virtual' performance – of Schubert 'Mass in G'. We owe a great debt of gratitude to our hard-working, energetic, enthusiastic and lots of other superlatives Musical Directors, Jenny and Tom, who, in spite of upheavals in their own lives, have kept our choral music alive. If you would like to join in with our 'Carol' concert on 15th Dec., with rehearsals after Christmas or any time really you would be most welcome.

A 'committee' meeting was held recently at which a number of decisions were made. Firstly, because we are still operating without a 'CEO' it was decided to rotate the Chairmanship of meetings between the 7 members of the main committee. The lack of a Chairperson is very far from ideal, particularly when we return to organising concerts. It also begs a number of other important issues concerning the management of the choir not least the legal requirement on a charity of registering an active 'spokesperson'. So, if you feel you could take on Chairmanship of the choir if only for a short period, please give this some urgent thought. You would be fully supported by an energetic committee and could even find it a fulfilling and creative proposition!

Secondly, we agreed that the last rehearsal of 2020 would be a 'Carol Concert' on 15th December and the first rehearsal of 2021 on 12th January. If you would like to participate in any of our zoom meetings please contact Jenny Martins (jennyrmartins@gmail.com) who will be pleased to email the zoom link to you. If you have any reservations about using 'zoom' or need help with the technology there are now lots of choir members with experience who can help (e.g. o.j.downing@btinternet.com).

Thirdly, because we cannot yet foresee a time when we can sing together face-to-face we shall continue to hold online rehearsals in the New Year. Our Musical Directors proposed that we could tackle the Brahms 'Requiem' which was mooted last year. Haydn 'Nelson Mass' and other pieces by Brahms – 'Schicksalslied' and 'Nanie' - were also suggested but the final choice will be dependent mainly on whether sufficient copies of the vocal scores can be obtained. Incidentally, Leeds Music Library has now re-opened so the Bliss and Chilcott scores currently stored in the Librarian's garage will need to be returned soon (sob!). There are still 2 copies of each missing so please check that you haven't hidden them somewhere! Arrangements for the return of currently distributed music and issue of new scores will be communicated by the Librarian over the Christmas period. Note however that we still hope to include the Schubert Mass in a live concert sometime (so don't forget it!)

Finally, it had been agreed at an earlier meeting that members who did not intend to participate in 'zoom' rehearsals up to the New Year could withhold the first half (£50) of their annual subscription. Now, if for any reason you do not intend to participate in zoom rehearsals during at least the early part of 2021, the ongoing subscription has been reduced to £25. Those of you who read the small print in the recent AGM Treasurer's report will remember that the choir holds a reserve balance in our deposit account that should keep us afloat pro tem.

So, here's hoping you all have a very safe and Happy Christmas and feel you can approach the New Year with optimism.
Remember, you can contact any member of the committee with any issues you care to air either directly by email or 'phone or via the choir email info@bradfordchorale.org.uk. Also our website: bradfordchorale.org.uk is still being managed by Nora Boswell and remains a mine of information.
